NEW CUMBERLAND — A Hancock County man has a court date after allegedly assaulting another man outside the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6450 in Chester late last month.

Hancock County Magistrate Matthew Harvey is scheduled to oversee the hearing for Louis P. Gallo, 63, of Chester, who is charged with malicious assault. The hearing is set for 11 a.m. Aug. 21 in Hancock County Magistrate Court.

The charges stem from an incident on the evening of July 31 when Gallo is alleged to have “pummeled” an unconscious Brian D. Sweeney, of New Cumberland, in excess of 20 times outside the Chester VFW, as Sweeney laid unresponsive on the sidewalk following a verbal dispute between the two in the building which later became physical.
