California Governor Gavin Newsom, on Thursday, blasted President Donald Trump, pointing out that U.S. Border Patrol agents were patrolling the street just outside of where he was speaking in Los Angeles.
"He's a failed president. Who else sends ICE, the same time, having a conversation like this? Someone who's weak. Someone who's broken. Someone whose weaknesses is masquerading as strength," Newsom said.
Newsom was discussing the decision to hold a Nov. 4 special election to seek approval of redrawn districts intended to give Democrats five more U.S. House seats in the fight for control of Congress. The move is a direct response to a similar Republican-led effort in Texas, pushed by President Trump.
Gregory Bovino, chief of the patrol’s El Centro, California, sector, told a reporter with KTTV that the agents were conducting a roving patrol, which had been done at that location previously. He said he was not aware that Newsom was nearby, but was defiant regarding the patrols.
"We're making Los Angeles and California a safer place. We're going to continue to do that. And they can take that one to the bank and cash it," he said.
He also said that despite protests, he believes the Border Patrol has public support.
