Spanning some 3,500 hectares, the Mer Blue Bog in Ottawa exists as a conservation area and popular tourist destination today. From 1942 to 1945, however—during the latter years of the Second World War—the peat bog served as a practice bombing range.
Now the bog has taken on another role as a site for graduate students Pablo Arzate and Sareh Mirbagheri to test out a new technology they have been developing at Carleton University in collaboration with 3XMAG Technologies.
Using drone-mounted magnetometry and radiometry along with advanced data processing techniques they are able to probe underground for certain non-organic mate
