A man has been arrested after a 73-year-old woman was found dead in her East London home last night (Thursday, August 14). Police were called to Russia Lane in Bethnal Green at 9pm.

The victim was found with a severe head injury before being pronounced dead at the scene. Her next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A 45-year-old man, who was known to the woman, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody, Scotland Yard confirmed. The force are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident.

Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who leads the central east command unit, said: "Our team of officers and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to this woman's tragic death.
