Nine-year-old Evelyn lives in a poor community in the Philippines. Like most of the kids there, she and her siblings are underweight and malnourished. “My stomach hurts when I am hungry,” recalled the young girl.

After their father left, their mom, Vernalyn became their sole provider. She sells bamboo souvenirs in neighboring beach towns. On a good day, she earns about $5.

“It felt like I could not do it anymore,” said Vernalyn with tears in her eyes. “But because of God, I didn’t give up.

“When we don’t have food, she is brave and says, 'We'll just have to eat rice with salt,' added Evelyn.
