The Lacombe Panthers U17 Boys soccer team won gold at the Tier 4 Provincials in Leduc.

The team, with players from Lacombe and the surrounding community, won a very close final game on July 6 against the Whitcourt Warriors.

"It was a very exciting final, we were behind 1-0, then we tied it, then we were behind 2-1, then we tied it, and then with 30 seconds to go in the game, we scored the winning goal," Coach Ben Varekamp said.

"During the game, I was playing striker, and the left wing scored the final goal. I ran into the corner with him, and everybody was celebrating around him. We knew we won after that," Lacombe Panthers player and team captain Tone Varekamp said.
