President Donald Trump has nominated E.J. Antoni, chief economist at the conservative Heritage Foundation, to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the federal agency that produces key data used to gauge the state of the labor market and broader economy.

While Trump has said that Antoni will ensure federal data is “HONEST and ACCURATE,” Antoni’s views and rhetoric have sparked criticism from liberal and conservative economists alike.

Trump’s fired the former BLS commissioner, a Biden appointee, earlier this month, claiming, without evidence, that data produced under her watch was “rigged.” The White House says they have faith Antoni will improve confidence in data administered by the BLS. Advertisement Advertisement
