The White House posted a video of a large number of U.S. Marshals and FBI agents in riot gear with shields marching through the halls of an apartment building to calmly arrest what has become known as the "Sandwich Guy."
On Sunday, a man in a pink shirt raged at police on the streets of Washington, D.C. before he threw his foot-long sandwich at them. The "sandwich slinger," allegedly lawyer Sean Dunn, was released without charge.
But he was re-arrested Wednesday after U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi hit him with felony charges — with that arrest filmed and the White House sharing the video. It showed a massive display of force.
Dunn said that 20 officers came to his home in DC's West End neighborhood, which is mere blocks from the posh neighborhood of Georgetown. Dunn's lawyers said that he attempted to turn himself in to the police, WUSA reported, but one person thinks filming the arrest was part of the plan.
The video of the arrest, done in the style of "Zero Dark Thirty," as one man said, is being needled as a desperate effort to make something mundane into something more significant.
"Even in the stupid Zero Dark Thirty hype video, they line up a zillion cops, he opens the door . . . and they calmly arrest him and take him down the elevator? This is the best edit you've got?" said law partner Sean Marotta.
He was responding to Amanda Moore's post of the video on Bluesky. The user who calls herself the "Antifa Nancy Drew" posted, "The White House posted an insane video of the police arresting the sandwich guy in a safe and wealthy neighborhood."
Journalist and researcher Hannah Gais was aghast. "THIS IS A VIDEO OF THEM ARRESTING A MAN WHO THREW A SANDWICH. HOW IS THIS F---ING REAL?" she asked.
"They sent 20 guys in, special ops style, to arrest the guy. who threw a sandwich …" posted Nat Purser, who does telecoms for the organization Public Knowledge.
"They're trying to make arresting a man who chucked a sandwich at a cop look like a f---ing action movie lol Absolute f---ing losers man," said researcher Joe Kassabian, who hosts the podcast "Lions Led by Donkeys."
"This elaborate operation involving 20 officers was all to arrest the guy who threw a sandwich. He says he had tried to turn himself in but they insisted on this ridiculous theater. He has already been released and a judge found the felony charge excessive. Do you feel safer?" commented host Krystal Ball.
Dunn was released on his own recognizance on Thursday after his lawyers made the argument that a felony assault charge was "excessive." The charge carries up to an 8-year prison sentence, WUSA reported.
