Guilford College has named Jean Bordewich, who has led Guilford College on an interim basis as it fights to keep its doors open, as its new president.

She was the consensus pick of the college's board of trustees, having overseen layoffs and the closing of dorms at the small liberal arts college in the last seven months, but also working alongside a grassroots effort to raise millions to close a budget year deficit essential to its accreditation, Dan Mosca, the board's chairman, said.

"Jean is a fireball," Mosca said. "She's got a magnetic personality, and people are responding to her. It's not just donors but the staff and faculty at Guilford College."

Four generations of her family walked its campus.
