LOUISVILLE, Ky. — There continues to be an urgent need for animal adoptions and fosters at the Louisville Metro Animal Shelter (LMAS).

On Friday, LMAS said due to an overwhelming number of stray cats and kittens, the shelter is temporarily pausing new cat intakes unless the cat is stray owned (microchip or ID tag), sick, injured or aggressive.

LMAS officials understand the decision may frustrate some in the community.

“The alternative is cats come in and cats here are euthanized for space and we DO NOT want to do that," LMAS wrote in a social media post.

The shelter said it will begin accepting cat intakes again starting Monday, Aug. 19 at noon.
