ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Yates County officials are warning residents about a scam involving fraudulent emails impersonating county planning officials.

According to the county, the scam targets individuals with active applications submitted to their local town or village that require review by a county planning board. Similar incidents have been reported in neighboring counties.

Officials said the emails request wire transfers, claiming payment is required as part of the County Planning Board review process. County leaders stressed these messages are not legitimate and are not from any official source.

All official Yates County email addresses end in @yatescountyny.gov. Emails from other domains should be treated as suspicious.
