A federal grand jury on Friday indicted New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and New Orleans Police Department officer Jeffrey Vappie on criminal charges, alleging they defrauded the city by pursuing a personal relationship while Vappie was on duty.
Together, Cantrell and Vappie face 18 felony counts, including conspiracy, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, false statements and false statements before a grand jury.
The 48-page indictment reveals new details of an alleged corruption scheme prosecutors first accused Vappie and Cantrell of perpetrating in the indictment secured in July of 2024.
