NEWARK - Elected officials pressed the Newark administration in June on why no street paving has begun this summer, during what is considered to be peak asphalt-paving season.

City officials explained that funding gaps and roads needing to “settle” have caused delays in street improvements, but assured that a $4,278,121.71 project to pave 35 locations in all five wards will begin in July.

But July has come and gone, and it remains unclear what roadway paving – if any – has begun or has been completed.

Documents from the Newark Department of Engineering detailing the tentative schedule for the upcoming city-wide paving project give a start week of July 21. All the paving locations’ statuses are listed as “to be determined.”
