DOWNTOWN — Alex Kurtz didn’t know what to expect when he stepped into Kings County Supreme Court on his first day. A math and history major used to academic research and quiet routines, he imagined a courthouse full of professionals speaking a language he wouldn’t understand.
“I assumed the court would be full of intimidating, whip-smart lawyers running circles around people with jargon and strategy,” Kurtz said. “Then I watched two attorneys argue during the very first hearing I saw, and it completely changed my perception. I realized the courtroom wasn’t this perfectly polished machine.”
Kurtz, a rising junior at the University of Virginia, spent the summer interning at Kings County Supreme Court through a program that introduces Brooklyn students to careers in law and public service.
