DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) -- 2 NEWS is highlighting local animals up for adoption as part of NBC's Clear the Shelters campaign.

At the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, every animal has a story.

"We see these animals come to us in all different shapes," said Jessica Garringer, Humane Society. "Some of them are healthy and happy and get adopted quickly, others come to us in really bad situations."

One recent story tugged on the heartstrings of everyone at the shelter.

"We had a chihuahua mother that was very pregnant. That girl was transferred to us from another shelter that couldn't handle her. And she literally, within a couple days of being here, gave birth to a litter of puppies," said Garringer.

But it was what happened in the days that followed that really struck a cord.
