A thieving care assistant stole from a trusting vulnerable resident and spent the money on gambling and booze.

Claire Kirwin, 43, took at least £2,250 from the elderly woman, who suffers from Huntingdon's Disease and requires round-the-clock care. The fraudster even used the victim's bank card to withdraw £1,000 while she was in hospital after suffering a fall.

Messages from the bank indicating her balance was low caused concern for the resident, who contacted her son and revealed Kirwin had been using her card without permission. Upon review of her bank statements, it emerged Kirwin had made multiple withdrawals to gambling sites.

The victim went on to disclose that she had given Kirwin at least £1,250 over the previous two years after being told she was struggling to feed her children
