LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - A new study suggests the Nine-banded armadillo is migrating towards Michigan.

Armadillos first migrated from South America to the United States in 1849, and since they have spread all over the southern and eastern U.S.

Dr. Brett DeGregorio, author of the study and Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, has been monitoring their migration patterns.

“Something that humans have done has made the landscape a little bit more hospitable to them,” said DeGregorio. “Whether it was our creation of roads, well irrigation [systems], somehow, we allowed them to pass that arid barrier of South Texas.”

The Nine-banded Armadillos are known for their sparse fur, low body fat, and living in warmer climates.

DeGregorio says this species isn’t built to survive cold
