AUSTIN, Texas — Two sisters in North Austin say they were left shaken after a scam call led to the Austin Police Department’s SWAT team pounding on their door Thursday.

Authorities say the incident could be part of increasingly sophisticated phone scams.

On Thursday, Bailey Rumsey said she had just finished a work meeting when her phone rang — a call that appeared to come from her sister, Whitney.

“My sister and I are best friends, so we call each other multiple times a day,” Rumsey said. “I was literally just about to call her anyway. So I answered like, ‘Hello,’ and there was just that man saying that he has her and her crying.”

Rumsey described the moment as “very scary.” The caller claimed Whitney was in immediate danger and threatened violence unless Rumsey acted quickly.
