SPRINGFIELD, Mo--Two weeks before the start of the high school football season in Missouri, Central high school has announced that it will cancel it's varsity season.
The reason is because there are not enough upper classmen to be competitive at that level.
The Bulldogs will play at the junior varsity level and develop those players so central can step back up to varsity in the future.
Last season, the Bulldogs were 0-10, and won just two games in 2023.
But in 2022, Central was 8-3 and was 4-1 at Harrison Stadium.
Springfield Public Schools Athletics Director Josh Scott says that the teams that were supposed to play the Bulldogs will now have an open date.
And they can try to schedule a new opponent if possible.
Springfield Central has been playing football since as far back as 1954
