BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon praised the Kern County Board of Education's efforts to block transgender participation in female sports.
The board's 6-1 vote follows a national effort to remove transgender athletes from high school sports, spearheaded by the Trump administration.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon wrote, "California's Kern County Board of Education made a courageous decision to defy their reckless Governor and take a stand for women and girls."
It's getting national attention, but the vote will have little effect, if any. We were unable to identify any transgender athletes that the board of education is overseeing.
The Kern County Office of Education has jurisdiction over roughly 400 students in the Alternative Education program
