An unsolicited letter sent by a United States lawmaker calling on western provinces to join the U.S. has caught the attention of Island leaders, who didn’t mince words in their responses.

Relations between Canada and the United States have taken a toll this year, following the U.S. beginning a trade war with Canada, with President Trump calling for the country to be annexed.

Several U.S. lawmakers have openly stated their support in Trump’s calls, including Republican Senator Joseph Martin from Maine, who recently sent an unsolicited letter to Courtenay-Comox Conservative MLA Brennan Day calling for western provinces to join the U.S.

“I initially thought that there’s no way this can be real,” said Day in an interview.
