A future where no car will require gas or even drivers deserves to be celebrated, but the commemoration won’t be held this weekend in Oakland County.

Instead, the gaze will be in the other direction, gloriously.

The Woodward Dream Cruise, which is celebrating its 30th birthday Saturday, observes how Metro Detroit bequeathed a four-wheeled gift to itself and the world and proceeded to turn up the volume in the 1950s and ’60s.

Custom cars from those decades will meander along a 16-mile stretch of Woodward Avenue in all their twin-turbo, gold-rimmed, chrome-plated, four-on-the-floor glory.
