ANAMOSA, Iowa (KCRG) - A century-old bridge in Anamosa is at the center of a dispute between the city and Jones County about which government is responsible for owning and maintaining the bridge.

The city recently filed a lawsuit after the county voted to end a longstanding agreement that determined which government would own and care for the bridge. Meanwhile, one resident is taking personal action to try to save the bridge.

“I just check and if they are getting close, I drop off a new one,” said John Dirks.

For the past 2.5 months, John Dirks of Anamosa has collected signatures from local business patrons who want to save the Dillon Military Bridge. He believes people across the country may also feel connected to the nearly 140-year-old bridge.
