In nearly a month of training camp, the persistent contractual standoff between wide receiver Terry McLaurin and the Washington Commanders lingered more as abstraction than impediment. They had time to reach a deal, time to mend hard feelings, time to reintegrate McLaurin.

On Friday, roughly three weeks before their regular-season opener, offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury gently sounded an alarm that time is running out. Kingsbury indicated McLaurin’s absence could both impair Washington’s offensive growth and endanger their regular-season performance if not resolved soon.
