SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Hurricane Erin strengthened into a Category 2 on Friday evening and was expected to continue rapidly intensifying, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said.

The hurricane was located 250 miles (405 kilometers) northeast of Anguilla as of the hurricane center's 11 p.m. EDT advisory. It had maximum sustained wind speeds of 100 mph (160 kph) and was moving west north-west at 17 mph (27 kph).

Hurricane Erin is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane over the weekend, forecasters said.
