“Toto, we aren’t in Kansas anymore” – a familiar line from the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz.”

Unfortunately, we can apply this statement to the state of education right now. We face a time of uncertainty in a landscape very different from what has been the typical beginning to the school year.

As we start the 2025-26 academic year, public schools have been put in the position of finding ways to rob Peter to pay Paul. The ripple effect of each federal and/or state cut or “reallocation” has a significant impact on all students and their families attending our public schools.

Those with disabilities (along with struggling learners), however, have even more to lose.
