VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — After more than eight years of studies, planning and construction, the nearly three-acre surf park that anchors Atlantic Park is ready to welcome surfers.
The first public surfing session begins at 6 a.m. Saturday and sessions will occur each hour thereafter until 11 p.m.
Using technology from Spain-based WaveGarden, surfers will be able to try and catch 1,000 waves per hour that can be made as high as six feet for those with experience, and as low as one foot for beginners.
The goal of the project is to help elevate the energy at Virginia Beach’s Oceanfront while also helping the resort become a year-round destination. • Atlantic Park's Surf Lagoon is 2.67 acres and can produce more than 1,000 waves an hour of 20 different varieties (WAVY Photo/Brett Hall
