Supermarkets are following Sainsbury's lead by hiking the price of the same essential item.

We reported recently how in our price comparison, which looks at the cost of the same eight items across the six main supermarkets, Sainsbury's was selling its cheapest 500g pack of beef mince for 17% more than most other retailers.

Its £3.50 price tag is a staggering 75% more than the product cost when we first started tracking prices in March 2022. Back then, packs at Aldi and Lidl, albeit 25% fat rather than Sainsbury's 20% fat version, were just £1.69.

But now other retailers are following suit. Tesco already increased its mince to £3.29 last month and has now increased it again, to match Sainsbury's price of £3.50.
