Bishop Manogue survived a a scare and Spanish Srings went on a long road trip as both picked up wins in the high school football season opening week.
Manogue outlasted McQueen, 36-29, after trailing 29-21 to start the fourth quarter. Spanish Springs downed Simi Valley, 41-21 for the Cougars first win in a season-opening game in 10 years.,
Also on Friday night, Fernley, from the Class 3A, beat Class 5A Douglas, 29-21, thanks to scoring 22 unanswered points.
Sparks rallied to get past Hug, 26-14 and Dayton beat Wooster, 45-0.
In the Bishop Manogue - McQueen game, Miners quarterback Brandon Mann completed 13-of-23 passes for 213 yards and fellow senior AMcGruder ran 15 timse for 63 yards and three touchdowns. Nate Simons caight six passes for 144 yard and one score.
