The number of pertussis, or whooping cough, cases in Hawaii has climbed to an alarming level this summer, state Department of Health officials say.
As of July 31, DOH has identified 203 pertussis cases — more than double the 84 cases identified during all of last year. In mid-May, the number was at a concerning high of 108 cases.
“Cases have been reported in every county, with the highest rates on Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii island,” said DOH in a news release. “Infants under 1 year old have been the most severely affected group. In addition, there are elevated case rates being seen among toddlers, children and adolescents.”
It is the highest number of cases reported in a decade, with five more months to go this year.
