BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - It’s Bennington Battle Day, a state holiday commemorating a key battle of the Revolutionary War.
It was this day in history, August 16, 1777, when American troops from Vermont and New Hampshire repelled the advancing British army as it tried to raid supplies from Bennington.
The fighting actually took place ten miles away in Walloomsac, New York. However, the battle is memorialized with the Bennington Battle Monument, which was built on the site of the supply depot.
The American victory weakened the British forces, setting the stage for their defeat in the Battle of Saratoga later that fall, which turned the tide of the war.
