STONINGTON — The Stonington boys tennis team's quest for a state championship three-peat came up just short last spring. After winning Class S's title in 2023 and 2024, the Bears were tied 3-3 against Suffield in the semifinals and held match point in a doubles match. But Suffield's duo took the last three points to edge out a victory in the decisive match to win, 4-3. Suffield went on to down Northwest Catholic, 5-2, for its first CIAC state crown, leaving Stonington coach John Adriano wondering what would have happened if the Bears got the elusive tie breaker. "In my opinion, Suffield-Stonington was for the state title and the final match result proved that," Adriano said. "You can't get only closer, mathematically, than we did against Suffield."
