WASHINGTON — FBI agents with covered faces backed up D.C. police officers during a routine traffic stop along the U Street Corridor just before 1 a.m. Saturday morning, part of an unprecedented federal law enforcement presence now patrolling the District's streets alongside National Guard troops.

The scene — a half-dozen FBI agents supporting Metropolitan Police Department officers — illustrates the far-reaching impact of President Donald Trump's order deploying federal agencies including the FBI, DEA and others to patrol Washington's neighborhoods.

Minutes after the first traffic stop ended with the driver's release, federal agents and MPD officers conducted another stop blocks away that resulted in at least one arrest. It was not immediately clear what charges the person faced.
