Icame across some bushes that were absolutely loaded with chokecherries recently, so I decided to pick them.
I’ve picked blueberries and Juneberries many times – both of which can be enjoyed just the way they are – but chokecherries are a first for me.
Chokecherries are a favorite of many late-summer foragers because they’re both abundant and easy to pick. By the time I’d picked most of the lowest-hanging berries on the bushes, I’d gathered about 2 gallons. Chokecherries are quite tart — to the point of being mouth-puckering, I dare say — so putting them to use is going to be a bit of a process, involving both time and a LOT of sugar.
Call it an experiment, perhaps even an adventure.
