The number of drivers being required to attend speed awareness courses has risen 139% since 2011 - with 1.84million drivers ordered to complete a day's training in 2024. And the data shows drivers are more likely to speed at certain times of the day.
Psychologist Dr Julie Gandolfi told Zego there are reasons why the roads see an increase in drivers breaking the speed limit at night. With 56% of car drivers exceeding the speed limit on a 30mph road at night compared to 42% in the day.
Dr Gandolfi said: “Generally it is likely that key factors include lighter traffic, more recreational driving, and drivers may perceive a lower likelihood of encountering enforcement measures. In some sub-groups, particularly younger drivers, passengers are more likely to be in the vehicle with the
