Iplanted some new trees this spring. What pruning should I be doing on those trees?

A few pruning cuts on those new trees can make a big difference in how they develop into mature trees.

Most trees develop best with a single leader or main trunk. Sometimes young trees have the top broken and develop multiple leaders. When this happens, it is best to remove all but one top. Leave the top that is growing the straightest, even if it is not the strongest. Sometimes tape will help hold it in an upright position.

Deciduous trees should have branches positioned at uniform levels and thickness around the trunk. When branches are noticeably thicker in one part of the tree, it is best to remove one or more extra branches back to their origin. When branches are longer, it is best to shorten back t
