Welland fire officials are crediting working smoke alarms for alerting the occupants at 123 Dover Rd., to an attic fire just before 11 p.m., on Friday night.

“There was smoke visible inside the house,” said Welland acting fire Chief Matt Richardson, who noted a mother and her three children were in the house at the time.

The mother took her children out safely and called 911.

“It was a short-term rental,” said Richardson. He noted fire crews were quickly able to locate the blaze in an attic wall and prevent the fire from spreading further.

“It is believed to be electrical in nature and is not considered suspicious,” Richardson said.

“Within a half-hour to 45 minutes they had everything under control.”

Power to the house was shut off and the mother was treated on the scene for minor
