If “Escape from Alcatraz” inspired President Donald Trump ’s insistence that the federal prison be reopened , it is safe to assume that another Clint Eastwood film played a role his attempted takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C.

Trump’s outlook on law and order should be familiar to anyone who has seen “Dirty Harry,” the 1971 classic featuring Eastwood as a tough, no-nonsense San Francisco cop who disdained rules and protocols as hindrances to justice.

Lines are clearly drawn. There are good guys and bad guys. Eastwood’s character, homicide inspector Harry Callahan, possesses insights that the small-minded bureaucrats who surround him fail to see: Justice can prevail only through toughness and enforced by those who are willing to bend the rules.
