Officials have issued an immediate precautionary evacuation alert for the Freshwater area of Carbonear.
The winds have turned around, pushing the fire that started in Kingston- and had been moving northward – to the south.
An air quality alert is also in place with smoke moving into Victoria, Carbonear and towns to the south.
Residents of Freshwater are being asked to be ready to evacuate on very short notice. That includes having a bag packed and all necessary documents and medications. If an evacuation order is imposed, then residents will have to leave and won’t be allowed back.
