A tragic head-on collision on August 9 has sparked outrage and renewed debate over Illinois’s sanctuary laws after a U.S. citizen was killed by a man who had been released from local custody seven times despite federal requests to detain him.

Rolando Ico-Choc, 30, a Guatemalan national with a history of serious criminal offenses, was driving southbound on Illinois Route 26 when he crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a vehicle driven by Darcy Brunner, 61, of Freeport. Brunner was killed instantly.
