(WHTM) — A lot of us have countless plastic tabs with barcodes hanging off our key rings and supermarket and pharmacy apps on our phones because, as they say, "It pays to be loyal," but does it pay even more to be disloyal?

Many people are signed up for loyalty programs for every supermarket chain where they live, but sometimes after taking a break from shopping at a specific location, a customer can receive discount cards in the mail, such as a $20 off a $100 purchase at GIANT, which is a lot more for 'not shopping' than for shopping.

Loyalty program algorithms scan for shoppers who stop shopping at their location, and to get them to return to their store, they send hefty discounts because they "missed you."
