SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - On Saturday, the Springfield Armory National Historic Site celebrated 50 years of serving the community and preserving history.
After four years of congressional debate, the bill establishing the Springfield Armory as a national historic site was signed into law in 1974. The site's outdoor space was used many times by the military.
"It helped build the city of Springfield, and it helps spur so many different industries that were here and the communities we have here today," said Kelly Fellner, Superintendent of the Springfield Armory National Historic Site.
To give back to the community, the Friends of Springfield Armory hosted a family-friendly event on the green. Attendees had the chance to tour the site and learn more about what's being done to preserve it
