A Broward Sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man who reportedly shot himself before attacking the deputy in Cooper City on Saturday, authorities said.

The incident unfolded shortly after noon near a shopping plaza in the 10200 block of Griffin Road.

Broward Sheriff's Office officials said deputies responded to a call reporting that a man had shot himself and found the injured man.

A deputy approached the man to try and help him but the man attacked the deputy, and the deputy opened fire, officials said.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials haven't released his identity.

The man's mother and a deputy were hospitalized, but neither were injured by gunfire, officials said.
