ASHEBORO, N.C. — A 22-year-old man is accused of firing a rifle into an occupied car on Watkins Street Friday night, hitting the driver in the upper arm and neck, according to Asheboro police .
Police said the suspect, identified as Dwayne Emilio Rivera, was taken into custody and is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle and discharging a firearm within city limits.
The victim, a 21-year-old man, was critically injured but survived. Police said he drove to a business at Elm and Salisbury streets for help around 10:54 p.m., as officers were dispatched to the area for reports of shots fired. Officers provided aid until EMS arrived and transported him to an out-of-county hospital.
