A Republican lawmaker in Illinois was hit with a wave of fact checks on Saturday after she posted an electoral map that misrepresented the political realities of her own state.
Republican U.S. Congresswoman Mary Miller of Illinois, who recently faced backlash after denouncing the decision to allow a man—whom she first misidentified as a Muslim and later acknowledged was Sikh—to deliver the House morning prayer, stepped in it on social media when she made a declaration about Republicans and Democrats.
"This map exposes the truth: ILLINOIS IS RED!" she claimed, alleging that the governor "JB Pritzker’s gerrymander is the only thing keeping Democrats in power."
Along with her comments, Miller included a map showing expansive rural red areas in Illinois, and small blue patches throughout the more densely populated regions.
But that misrepresented the reality, according to commenters. One self-proclaimed "centrist" said, "These kinds of maps where the entire land is color coded are extremely misleading."
Veteran Stan Walters replied to the lawmaker, "These two circles are 85% of the state's population. You dumb moron."
The popular Trump Tracker account wrote, "MAGA still thinks land votes."
"What a dumb group of people," the group added over the weekend.
Political Election Projections replied with, "This tweet exposes the truth: Mary Miller is an idiot!"
Noted conservative attorney and anti-Trump critic George Conway also weighed in, using only one word along with a population density-based map of his own.
"Idiot," he wrote.
