A car driven by a suspected DUI driver slammed into a home in Downey during the early morning hours of Saturday, killing a grandmother and injuring her granddaughter.

The home on Gallatin Road was boarded up by the afternoon with plywood covering up the two women’s rooms – right next to each other – that the car crashed into.

The victims’ family said they heard the car speeding down the street at around 2:30 a.m. followed by a loud noise.

The 73-year-old woman died at the scene while her 24-year-old granddaughter was taken to a hospital for her injuries.

Police said the 24-year-old driver from Maywood was arrested on suspicion for driving under the influence.
