The Philadelphia Phillies placed three-time All-Star pitcher Zack Wheeler on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to a blood clot located near his right shoulder.
The news came from Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski less than 24 hours after Wheeler allowed two runs on four hits over five innings in Friday's 6-2 win over the Washington Nationals.
"There's not a whole lot we can say on it at this time," Dombrowski said after Saturday's game. "But I commend (the medical staff) for finding this because it could've been a much more trying situation than what it is."
The Athletic reported later Saturday that Wheeler, 35, will undergo additional medical tests to find out more about the ailment and whether he could return this season.
