The roof of a suburban apartment building was torn to pieces by severe thunderstorms storms that swept through the Chicago area Saturday afternoon.

Residents of an apartment building in suburban Mount Prospect, located on the 700 block of West Huntington Commons Road, were evacuated after the building's roof was ripped to shreds by severe storms.

Pipes in the building burst as the roof was torn away, sending water gushing into the building, a resident said.

"Water was just pouring down the ceiling in all the hallways," said Kamil Seremac, a resident of the building. "It was scary."

Several vehicles parked near the building were crushed by falling debris, including Seremac's van.

Dozens of residents of the building were evacuated.
