LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) - Over 155 Texas tortoises are turned in as part of an effort that aims to keep the threatened species safe.

On Saturday, the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center in collaboration with the Texas Parks and Wildlife and Texas A&M Corpus Christi held a Texas tortoises turn-in event to receive the animals from people who may have them as pets.

Within a few hours, the center received an overwhelming amount of tortoises from the public that they had reached capacity for the day.

According to Bianca Brewster, the director of the science center, they are in the process of checking on the turtles to make sure they are healthy before turning them over to other sanctuaries.
