The Roswell Independent School District Board of Education on Tuesday eliminated 20 slots from the district's pre-kindergarten program, a move that allows the district to continue to receive state funding.

Board members Jared Ashby, Jack Cheney, James Edwards and Hilda Sanchez voted to reduce the number of pre-k spots available to children from 360 to 340 for the 2025-2026 school year. Board Member Ryan French was absent.

Sally Green, early childhood director for the Roswell Independent School District (RISD), said that of the 360 slots, 288 are filled. The reduction in spots will enable RISD to approach having 95% of its pre-k slots filled, a requirement the district must meet to continue receiving funding from the state's New Mexico Pre-K program, which is overseen by the New Mexico Ea
